“Great minds discuss ideas; average minds discuss events; small minds discuss people” – Eleanor Roosevelt
My wife says I’m a fanatic in everything I do.
I thought this was an interesting charge.
Surely being a fanatic is a prerequisite for success – going one step further than most others? Just one step? Only a few steps more than average?
I think people get used to comfort as they get older. No one is telling them what to do. No one is telling them their ideas or thoughts are wrong, unlike when they were young (when everyone felt entitled to tell them they were wrong).
Then, because most people become accustomed to a comfortable world (both physically and mentally), they begin to seek only comfort. Comfort is nice and warm.
But in doing this, people become uncomfortable with discomfort. Unable to tolerate having their feathers ruffled. And learning is often mentally uncomfortable. So as collateral to their pursuit of comfort, they accidentally stop learning. Then they become resentful or envious of others who keep improving. Then they become small people.
So to remain a great person in life, you must be comfortable with discomfort. You must continue to learn. You must be a fanatic for improvement in everything you do.
Oh, and you should get 8 hours’ sleep every night. Don’t believe anyone who says working 16 hours a day is the key to success.
Monday Monologue done.
